Russia has named the 21 players tasked with bringing a medal to the host nation at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games’ women’s ice hockey tournament.

As expected, the Tornado Moscow Region women’s hockey club will be well represented in Sochi. Eight players from that team will be on the national squad. Tornado forwards Tatyana Burina, Iya Gavrilova, and Yekaterina Smolentseva, will be counted on to pace the Russian offence.

Defenceman Anna Shibanova, who collected four points in six games while scoring the game-winning goal in the bronze medal game of last year’s Women’s Worlds, should provide a scoring threat on the blue line for the Russians.

Nadezdha Alexandrova, who was selected as the Directorate Top Goaltender at the 2013 Women’s World Championship, was a notable omission from the Sochi roster due to pregnancy. The likely starting netminder would be Anna Prugova, who was on the Vancouver 2010 roster but only saw one game.
